The Police were an English rock band formed by bassist / vocalist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland. The band, which drew on reggae, punk and jazz, is considered one of the best bands of the 1980s and recorded hits like "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take."

Training and early career of The Police

In 1976, Sting played with a jazz band called Last Exit. Stewart Copeland, who was the drummer in Curved Air (a progressive rock band), saw a performance by Sting and was impressed. Shortly after Last Exit to have dissolved, the two musicians decided to form a band with guitarist Henry Padovani. Later, in 1977 with the name The Police, the band released their first single, "Fall Out" by the indie label Illegal Records, which was created by Stewart Copeland and his brother Miles (manager of the Police).
